You’ll want to check the weather forecasts before you go. The temperatures in early June can be very different than in mid-August. However, in general you are going to want warm clothing. This depends a bit on where you’re going and what you’ll be doing. The answer will be different if you’re an indoor person headed to Alaska than if you’re an outdoor person headed to Nassau.

There really is only one basic rule for the main dining rooms.
Remy Brunch Dress Code – Previous Rules
This is one of my favorite dresses for Minnie Mouse and of course, it is always great to see Mickey in his tux. Remember to check the Navigator to see when and where you want to go for pictures if you do at all. In fact, I can’t remember the last time we did.
Main Course
What this means is guests can dress to the nines and take advantage of special photo opportunities during this special-themed night. Additionally, Disney Cruise Line photographers will be out and about in the atrium, with special backdrops just for these nights. You don’t have to be in tennis shoes all day, but leave your fancy wedges at home. I brought running shoes, sandals, flip flops (for the beach) one pair of wedges that could dress up a more casual outfit, and one pair of heels for formal night. I actually forgot that it was semi-formal night on our cruise…oops. But the women around us were wearing some sort of casual dress (maybe a sundress and cardigan) and the men were wearing nice slacks and a polo shirt.
You are going to have a great time no matter what you wear. If you want to dress up this is such a great opportunity to do that. If you want to keep it smart but casual you are going to have a great time too. The key really is just to feel comfortable with your choice of what to wear on formal night on a Disney Cruise.
Formal Night on a Disney Cruise: A Classroom for Kids Dining Etiquette
We have talked so much about what to wear on your Disney Cruise at night, we haven’t even touched on what to wear during the day. If you choose to not dress up, you will not feel out of place because so many others are not in costume either. You can always take your own photos, but many people like to take advantage of the Disney Cruise Ship photographers. They have many different formal and not-so-formal backgrounds set up to take some great photos. This very versatile Mermaid evening cocktail dress (yes you can channel your inner Disney Princess Ariel), is very reasonably priced. This is one of those nights when it is very difficult to choose what to order as there is so much that is really exceptional.
There really can’t be many places in the world where it is absolutely fine, and almost expected, that you can dress as a pirate for dinner. Dress-up night is a good opportunity to put on your finest clothes and have a great picture taken. On each cruise, there will be an optional “dress up” night. Disney Cruise dining is one of the best parts of the whole vacation.

It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to wear since I didn’t want it super “costumey” but still wanted to look pirate themed. I decided on an off-the-shoulder striped shirt with a sleeveless vest that I could pair with jeans and boots I already had. I completed the look with a red scarf (actually made for working out), big hoop earrings and a pirate medallion.
Therefore, we wore casual clothes instead of bathing suits. I will say most people dressed up to some extent. While many wore formal attire, others wore simple dresses that you would find at a wedding. On most cruises of seven nights or longer, there is the opportunity for guests to participate in a family friendly talent show. If you’d like to take part in this, be sure to bring any special costumes or shoes that you might need. But if you want to eat in the main dining room and wear shorts on formal night, go for it.
Royal Caribbean is slightly more formal than Carnival. Suits and ties for men, and dresses and pantsuits for the ladies are expected on formal nights. The line also has what is referred to as smart casual nights, which roughly correlates to what is expected on a Carnival formal night. Polo shirts for the men, and sundress or Capri pants and blouses for the women. If formal nights are causing you to be anxious then you can relax.
There is also a semi-formal night which entails suits and jackets for men, and dresses and pantsuits for women. The “dress up” evening is what the jackets optional choice on a Disney Cruise is called. Most Disney cruises also involve one or more theme nights like tropical and pirate nights where a loud shirt or eye patches will fit in. The line’s two specialty restaurant Palo and Remy are always semi-formal to formal. We saw a lot of people participating in pirate night. And Disney will gift you with a rockin’ pirate bandana that you can wear.
I was fine when I was in the sun, but when I sat on the deck in the shade, I was chilly. This is also what I wore for dogsledding on Mendenhall glacier. If you wish, you can opt out of your MDR assignment and eat elsewhere any night or nights that you choose.
It isn’t really something that can or should stop you from enjoying your cruise. There are options for getting formal attire onboard the ship, and if it isn’t for you, there are casual options. Royal Caribbean’s Windjammer buffet will serve you whether you’re wearing shorts or a suit. Room service is available on most every cruise line even when the buffet is closed. Formal nights are a throwback to the golden age of transatlantic sailing when the first-class passengers would have an exquisite formal meal in tuxedos and evening gowns.
