Now for the second project I was asked to create a Design Scheme to decorate any room using my Personal Style Board as a concept. To present it I needed to produce a sample board which is basically a collage of proposed materials, fabrics, colours, images of furniture and accessories. It is one of the visual tools which helps to sell designer’s ideas to a client, so excellent presentation is crucial here. This results in real costs that interior designers must consider when offering these boards to clients. The material costs can vary widely based on the specific materials chosen. The software is only a tool for designers to create mood boards; creative inspirations need more than just a digital tool.
Mixing Textures for Visual Interest
When it comes to design projects, vision boards are a must-have—it’s just a matter of what the phrase vision board means to you. Maybe it’s a dedicated Pinterest board, maybe it’s a folder of screenshots on your phone, or maybe it’s a physical board where you pin up pictures you find along the way. Whatever your methods for capturing your inspiration, it’s important to go with what works for you. Once you know what look you're going for, it's time to start collecting ideas. Look through design magazines, search online for images, and save anything that catches your eye.
How Much Do Interior Designers Charge?
Consider factors such as color, texture, pattern, and scale when arranging the samples. Don’t be afraid to mix and match materials to create visual interest and depth in your design. Consider employing professional interior designers that are certified and licensed with either the ASID, NCIDQ, or the CID to ensure you get the best results. There are also colleges, such as the New York School of Interior Design where students can earn a Certificate of Design.
Creating a Cohesive Look
Opt for fabrics and textiles that are made from sustainable materials such as organic cotton, bamboo, or hemp. These materials are grown without the use of harmful pesticides or chemicals and have a lower impact on the environment. Additionally, consider fabrics that are produced using eco-friendly manufacturing processes.

Communicating your ideas through mood board designs is one of the best ways to let your clients grasp the project’s theme. As here with this image, the musical theme is showcased through different guitar images and clears the intent of rock music. When it comes to the creative process of designing beautiful mood boards, don’t limit yourself. You can add as many elements to your mood board as you want, but it should not be too cluttered and should add meaning to the design.
For furnishings, expect to pay cost-plus, which is 17% to 45% over retail prices. Eco-friendly finishes are becoming increasingly popular in interior design. Some of the popular eco-friendly finishes include low-VOC paints, recycled glass tiles, natural fiber carpets, and reclaimed wood flooring. These finishes are environmentally friendly and can help reduce the carbon footprint of your home. As a beginner in interior design, you will need some essential tools to get started. Some of the tools you will need include a measuring tape, a level, a hammer, a screwdriver, a drill, a saw, a paintbrush, a paint roller, and a ladder.

The goal of a physical mood board is to see how the different elements, textures, colors, and finishes within a room work alongside each other. I like to layer them with the larger “base” elements of a space on bottom (like flooring), with the smaller decor type swatches on top (like hardware or fabric swatches). Material boards allow designers to bring their vision to life in a tangible way. Seeing actual samples of fabrics, finishes, textures, and colors helps designers better conceptualize how elements will look together in the final design.
Customization of the models is accessible through the addition of different layers and styles. It enables interior designers with functions to create, design, and render 3D spaces. So, you don’t need to invest in different software for individual tools that offer either designing or rendering.
To be eligible, you must have a GPA of 3.0 or above and possess a design portfolio. The BFA program creates a foundation of knowledge and skills that students will use in their professional lives. All undergraduate students are required to complete work experience in their discipline or allied profession as a degree requirement. Visit the School of Architecture Career Services page for more information about the services offered by our Career and Outreach staff. The BFA program has 128 semester hours with 75 hours of major study, 45 hours in the liberal arts, and 9 hours of open electives. A portfolio review is required for students advancing from second-year studios into the upper-division studios.
The furniture board is so much fun, in my opinion, because I love furniture. I think it's one of those items that complete a space and bring it alive. Also, it adds the functionality aspect to it, which is so important in interior design.
These samples can include fabrics, wood finishes, paint swatches, tile samples, and any other materials relevant to your project. Material boards offer several key benefits in the interior design process. Firstly, they provide a realistic representation of how materials will look when combined, helping clients visualize the end result and make informed decisions.

Design colors, materials, finishes, furniture, environmental graphics and more as you shape the experience of everyday life. When an interior designer must work with a general contractor while construction or remodeling is going on, they typically charge a management fee of about 25%. The cost to hire an interior decorator is also affected by the look you want to achieve, as luxury décor and specialty contractors cost much more than widely available ones. Many homeowners on a budget hire an interior designer to draw up remodeling and decorating plans and oversee the rest of the project on their own. The average cost to hire an interior designer is $5,406 with most homeowners spending between $1,893 to $11,180. Hourly rates range from $50 to $200 on average or around $5 to $12 per square foot.
This allows apps to instantly produce professional, cohesive material boards that designers can customize. These virtual boards allow clients to visually explore materials and colors in 3D spaces through a mobile device or VR headset. Sharing images of their flat lay boards on social media or portfolios allows designers to highlight their skills in pulling together cohesive palettes and styles. A well-styled flat lay material board creates visual harmony by carefully choosing complementary materials that work together. Once you have created your material board, it’s time to bring your vision to life. This involves sourcing materials, working with contractors and suppliers, and overseeing the implementation of your design.
If the client is environmentally conscious, opt for sustainable and eco-friendly materials. By tailoring the design to the client’s lifestyle, you can create a space that not only looks beautiful but also enhances their daily life. Once you have established your base color, consider adding pops of color to create visual interest and focal points in your design. These pops of color can be introduced through accent furniture, artwork, decorative accessories, or even bold fabric choices. Consider the psychology of color and how different hues can evoke specific emotions or moods. For example, blues and greens can create a calming and tranquil atmosphere, while yellows and oranges can add energy and vibrancy.
This can include reclaimed wood, recycled glass, or repurposed materials. These materials not only contribute to a more sustainable design but also add a unique and eclectic touch to your space. If you want to infuse your space with a playful and vibrant vibe, experiment with bold colors, patterns, and unexpected combinations. Incorporate materials with a high-gloss or glossy finish for a vibrant look.
